Andrew,with South‘s shape how would I know not to bid 5,4,3? Im presuming we would prefer not to end up in a club contract, so is it that if the ‚3‘ suit is a minor one would prefer a NT bid?manxthsnks, Phena

Hi Phena. Good thought. It's also that 2NT could easily be the last making contract. Also, the 5-4-3 doesn't normally work when partner has bid the "one".

Andrew, you say going back to the opener's first bid is a preference and not a supporting bid. What if, after showing your partner your hand by bidding properly to show the shape etc of it, you can actually support your partner's opening bid with say a 5/3 or 6/2 fit. Would that not be of a supporting nature? I hope that makes sense

Hi Neil. Yes, going back to opener's first suit may be delayed support; but because it may be mere preference, opener should assume that. If responder actually has (delayed) support, he can bid back to opener's first suit next time. In other words, on today's deal, after 1H-1S-2D-2H-2NT, if North does have three hearts, he can now bid 3/4H.

Thanks so much for this Andrew.just going back to the opening lead. I understand why leading from a long sequence is a good lead and that this remains the case in near touching high cardsi would not have treated A10 9 as near touching though. Could you explain what you see as near touching cards here?thank you.

Hi Jane. Yes I understand it’s perhaps not the best expression, sorry about that. If you have three of the top six cards in a suit, and two of them are touching, lead the top of the two touching cards. I think that covers everything.

Hi Andrew. So if north had bid 3h a round earlier (1H-1S-2D-3H) as in (I thought) 'I like your hearts partner but wanted to show you my spades first' how would south interpret it?

Hi MaryRose, that 3H bid would show three hearts and be game invitational showing about 10-12 points.

And if north had gone straight to 3H (IH-3H) - no mention of spades - that would show four hearts and be game invitational showing about 10-12 points. Is that correct?

Exactly right MaryRose. Both 3H bids show ten-twelve points, but only the immediate 3H bid shows a fourth heart.

Andrew. With 4 S you would bid 1S as responder so if you repeat them why is it showing 6 & not 5S, as we play 4 card majors I find this confusing.? Thx

Hello Sandra, yes it's a cornerstone of bidding that you should try if at all possible to avoid repeating a five-card suit. Occasionally, opener has to do it in a cramped auction; but responder should avoid doing it; with onky five cards, she can go with open of opener's suits, bid a second suit, or bid Notrumps, according to the situation.

Hi Andrew, had South had a stronger hand ( 19+) that justified a jump to 3D (instituting a game force) am I correct in thinking that North, with their weak hand, would now have had to make a preference bid of 4H ( despite only having 2 hearts)? Using the principal of "Fast arrival" this would show a weaker hand, whereas a bid of 3H would have been stronger, presumably with genuine support, is that correct? Thanks

Very good question John. The answer is that -H-1S-3D-3H is a preference bid, so not subject to fast arrival principles. However, 1H-1S-3D-4H IS pretty weak a la fast arrival. So there is an issue with the good hands with heart support; unless you want to bid 5H (a bit vulgar!), you bid the ambiguous 3H (assumed to be pref) but when you bid hearts again next time, can now be read to be better than the jump to 4H the previous round.

If South had opened 1D with 5 cards and rebid 2H with 4 cards after N's 1S would North support D's at the 3 level?

Hi Mona, that’s a very tricky sequence bidding 1D-then-2H, precisely as it forces partner to the Three-level to give a preference. So opener must beware and have substantial extra values to do that.

I tried to play the hand as shown on play this hand. It is impossible as when you played it the ops won with the ace on the second round giving us the entry into dummy to enjoy the spades. In the play this hand they held it up until the 3rd round so can you explain how to play it?

Hi Jennie, so you would then win the 2nd club with dummy's queen and cash the ace-king of spades (throwing diamonds). You could then cross to the ace-king of hearts, give up the fourth heart to East, win east's diamond return with the ace and cash the fifth heart.

If I was sitting East I would be very much inclined to place South with singleton SQ after South switches to low H (rather than continuing spades). Consequently I would be reluctant to return a C to partner’s presumed CA as this would set up entry to two winning spade tricks. Can’t see contract making if East switches to either red suit when in with H8? Johnny

I agree a singleton spade Johnny, but declarer can always get to dummy via CQ himself. Actually, it can't quite be beaten on any defence. A diamond switch probably best but declarer's D10 saves the day for him.

Yep - provided declarer does not win first trick with lazy CJ!
